The Biggest Golf Amateur Event in the World is Coming to Manila

The First Time Ever In The Philippines

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be treated like a pro in an international world class golf competition?

Every year, thousands of golfers from 45 different countries compete in an International Golf Competition to win the chance to represent their country and bring home the gold at the World Amateur Golfers Championship Finals.

This year, the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) is coming to the Philippines for the first time and will be fielding a few qualifying tournaments to determine who will be the 5 Class Champions that will represent the Philippines National Team at the annual World Amateur Golfers Championship, which will be held this year in Malaysia.

Do you think you have what it takes?

Ultimate Olympic Experience

The World Amateur Golfers Championship was founded in 1995 by the late Sven Tumba, Sweden’s sporting legend, who sadly passed away in 2011. As a Professional Golfer and 4 Time Olympic Gold Medalist, it was Sven Tumba’s dream to create an international competition for all to participate.

“An Olympian creating the Olympic experience for the average person. To give the opportunity to those regardless of age, gender, or skill level, the honor of playing for one’s country and the pride of wearing it’s colors. That dream is the World Golfers Championship.”

45 World Teams in 5 Different Handicap Classes

What makes the WAGC unique compared to most other Amateur golf tournaments is that people of all skill levels can participate, compete and realistically have the opportunity to win and represent their country on an international level.

The World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) currently has 45 different host countries who put up Local Qualifiers and National Championships to determine who will represent their National Home Team. These winners are then sent on an all expense paid trip to the WAGC – World Finals where they get to feel and be treated like a true professional.

At the WAGC Finals, the team winners will be joined by VIP golf enthusiasts, business leaders, sponsors and even royalty from all corners of the globe, who will also compete against people in their respective handicap classes as they try to win and represent their country.

Recognized Across The Globe

Today, the World Amateur Golfers Championship is the largest amateur golf tournament in the World and has been commemorated 22 times in numerous countries from around the globe.

The WAGC is supported by the patronage of world-class golfers worldwide. The late Arnold Palmer and the late Severiano Ballesteros were Tournament Patrons for over a decade. Since the sad passing of Arnold “The King” Palmer in 2016, Annika Sorenstam, who is one of the greatest female golfers of all time has taken over as Tournament Patron and is also the Honorary Advisory Board Chairperson for WAGC. The WAGC is also a partner of the PGA Tour

How it Works

Throughout the coming months, there will be a series of qualifying rounds where golfers will go head to head and compete against other players in their respective handicap classes. The 5 Handicap flight divisions are 0 – 5.4, 5.5 – 10.4, 10.5 – 15.4, 15.5 – 20.4 and 20.5 – 25.4. The winners of the qualifying tournaments will be given entries into the national finals.

The winners of the national finals will get an all expensed paid trip entry to the World Finals in Malaysia to represent the Philippines.

The World Finals is an exciting week of intense competition, beautiful scenery, exquisite luxury and great golf. It will be a week long, 4 Day competition under the strict guidance of professional referees assigned from the PGA.

Off the course everyone enjoys various activities such as banquets, networking and having a great time with other colleagues from across the globe.

Want to Represent the Philippines in the World Finals in Malaysia?

April 28, 2017 marked the beginning of a changing tide in the game of golf here in the Philippines. Throughout the year, literally hundreds of tournaments are thrown nationwide. All of these tournaments vary merely by the causes they support, the corporations that sponsor them and the clientele they serve, but none pull the nation together to play for something greater. What happens after the tournament is over?

GolfPH successfully launched its celebrated partnership with the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) organization through the Philippines’ first-ever qualifying WAGC tournament – GolfPH’s annual Par Tee At The Greens Tournament held at the prestigious Wack Wack Golf and Country Club last April 28, 2017.

At stake were five slots to the national finals scheduled in October this year.  Over 124 golfers teed off early to take on the narrow fairways and slippery greens of Wack Wack’s challenging West Course under a stroke play net handicap format, all hoping to be part of the first batch of national finals qualifiers.

Congratulations To The First 5 National Finalists

In the end, it was Augusto de Jesus lording it over Division 1, Alan Alegre besting Division 2, Jaime Melo bagging Division 3, Francis Talion winning Division 4, and Kathy Uy running away with Division 5.

It wasn’t all competitive play during the tournament as “fun” hole awards such as Closest to the Pin (hole 3), Longest Drive (hole 7), Longest Putt (hole 10) and Most Accurate Drive (hole 12) were also handed out.  Back in the clubhouse, players feasted on a hearty lunch buffet and enjoyed the sponsor display booths.

More fun followed in the program hosted by former PBA player, Vince Hizon, and his co-host, Ana Betita, both of whom picked out the lucky major and minor raffle prize winners and had players join in some parlor games.

It wasn’t just all fun and games during the program since a portion of the proceeds from the event were given out to the anti-child trafficking organization, Love 146.  Errol Chua, managing partner and VP of Marketing for GolfPH, presented the PhP50,000.00 check donation to Love 146’s representatives.

All in all, it was another successful event by GolfPH that makes the amateur golfing landscape more exciting through its collaboration with the WAGC.

Special thanks to Bluespark Solutions who co-presented the event.  A heartfelt thanks go out to all our sponsors who made the event possible — Alveo, Nissan / Suzuki, Ayalaland, Foton, Stronghold Insurance, Camella, Trojan Batteries, PAGCOR, Katana Techworks, VSO Group of Companies, Bacardi, Azalea, Kapihan ni Igan, MFC, Pleasure Place, Anagen, Cardia Olympia, WAGC, The Plaza, K & G, and Custom Club Makers.

Philippines To Host The Next Asia Golf Tourism Convention

$

In 2016, just 7.8% of the Philippines GDP was attributed to the Travel and Tourism Industry. Compare that with the 25.1% that tourism brings to the GDP of Thailand and you’ll begin to realize that something is not right.

We have the best beaches, many beautiful golf courses, we’re English speaking, it’s sunny, and Filipinos are some of the happiest people on earth.

But yet… the Philippines still remains at the bottom tier of the tourism list.

This poses the question as to why?

Why isn’t the Philippines considered to be one of the premier golf destinations in South East Asia compared to some of the other countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia?

Good News. Things Are Changing For The Better

This year, the Tourism Board of the Philippines is determined to create change. Make an impact and let the world see how great of a golf destination the Philippines really is.

Spearheaded by the head of the Tourism Promotion Board (TPB) of the Philippines, Cesar D. Montana and the President of the Association for Inbound Golf Tourism in the Philippines, Connie Mamril. A Philippine delegation of around 30 golf tour operators, resort owners, media and golf industry representatives flew out to Danang, Vietnam to Promote, Network and Participate at the latest Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) this past May.

They also went there to bid and represent the Philippines as our country Just Won the rights to host next year’s Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) in Manila!

What is the AGTC?

AGTC is the most elite premier golf travel event in the Asia Pacific Region. This event focuses on the promotion of golf tourism throughout the continent and allows buyers as well as sellers to interact face to face at an annual convention.

It’s an opportunity to break bread among nations with the common interest of golf bridging them together. Each year, the event gets bigger and bigger. This year, over 600 delegates from all over the world flew in to meet, network and promote the game of golf.

Congratulations to the Tourism Promotion Board of the Philippines, the Association for Inbound Golf Tourism and the rest of the Philippines delegation that flew out to Da Nang, Vietnam and took part in the bidding process.

This event will bring brand new exposure to the Philippines from people all over the world, ultimately helping our nation. Hopefully it will be a good opportunity to drive tourism in the country and really show people what this nation has to offer.

Congratulations to Jordan Mamaril, Regent Travel and Sherwin Tan, Happy Travel and Tours for taking 2nd place in the AGTC Golf Tournament Team competition.

We can’t wait for 2018 and look forward to what’s in store for next years convention!

How To Develop a Pre-Shot Routine Like Clockwork

How To Develop a Pre-Shot Routine Like Clockwork

One of the most common questions I get from students, golfing buddies and players alike is: how can I focus and block out all distracting thoughts when I play?

Obviously, if there was a surefire method to do this, then we’d all be contending for the FedEx Cup year after year.  But, alas, such is the game of golf wherein numerous driving range sessions, instructional videos, pro sessions and casual swing advice don’t guarantee a low score.

Here’s 2-time major champion, Ernie Els, demonstrating what I mean:

If someone as accomplished as The Big Easy has difficulty maintaining 100% focus for an entire round, then what more for us, mere mortals?

Don’t  panic!  There are a lot of strategies to attain focus, and in this article, I will be explaining how PRE-SHOT ROUTINES can help you focus during your round.

My underlying principle about FOCUS is that it is not about the absence of thoughts, but rather, the absence of distracting thoughts.  In a round of golf, for example, players never say they were out of focus when they played a good shot or hole.  But for those who played terribly, they will tell you outright that they were distracted and that there were so many things going on in their heads.

This is where pre-shot routines – both mental and physical – come in.  When done automatically, pre-shot routines help you rule out all thoughts and actions that typically lead to terrible shots.  If the only thing occupying your mind is your pre-shot routine, then focus is more easily attained.

No more stray thoughts like “will I shank this?” or “what if I hit this shot out-of-bounds?” to disrupt your rhythm.  The same goes with your physical pre-shot routine.  By following your “step-by-step” routine (ex. stand behind the ball, line up the target, take 3 full swings, etc.), your actions become a picture of efficiency without any unnecessary movement.

In short, pre-shot routines allow you to attain golf’s zenith of goals, which is, to stay in the moment.
The key is in establishing your own personal mental and physical routine, and then, meshing both.  Most of the time, you already have your own pre-shot physical routine (even if you don’t do it in every shot) so the challenge is in developing the mental routine.

How To Develop a Pre-Shot Routine Like Clockwork

Here’s an example which you can practice:

  1. Assess the shot conditions (ex. Wind? Hazard to the left? OB to the right?)
  2. Find your target.
  3. Visualize the perfect shot – imagine the exact flight path that you want your ball to follow when you hit it, and where exactly you want it to land
  4. (before swinging) Tell yourself, “Go for it (or any positive word/s that helps you zero in on the ball before you hit the ball).”
  5. (Then take the club back and hit the ball).

Keep the routine you choose to develop simple, keep it natural, and keep it within the context of golf and your current playing conditions.  The above example will naturally blend with whatever current physical pre-shot routine you already have.  In case you don’t have one, here’s an example of a simple physical pre-shot routine:

  1. Stand behind the ball with your chosen club.
  2. Make 2 full practice swings.
  3. Take 2 deep breaths
  4. Walk to the ball and address.
  5. Take 1 deep breath.
  6. Take the club back and hit the ball.
  7. Follow through on your shot and keep your position until the ball lands and rolls to a stop.

As I said, the key here is in meshing both mental and physical routines.  Below is a table to show how you can mesh both of the given examples:

Golf is a game of consistency and focus.  Establishing a pre-shot routine is one of the best ways that allows you to consistently focus.  By “training” your mind to focus consistently on a routine, you make the communication between mind and body a lot clearer and easier to attain.

A lot of sport psychology techniques all seem so “common sense,” but as we all know from playing this crooked game whether as a professional or a weekend hacker, “common sense” doesn’t always mean “common practice.”

So practice! And practice.  And practice.

In a number of weeks, you would have gained laser-like focus while striping those fairways and throwing darts at that hole like clockwork.

Five More Advance to the WAGC National Finals

The rains have begun to pour but that didn’t stop 51 aspiring amateur golfers from making their way to the 2nd qualifying tournament of the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) held at the historic Sta. Elena Golf And Country Club last Monday, June 5.

Staged jointly with the Assumption Antipolo Batch ’92 Invitational Tournament, the golfers were put to the test by Sta. Elena’s famed Banahaw course.

Known for it’s picturesque fairways and slippery greens tightly guarded by the nasty rough and unpredictable bunkers, the golfers took on one challenge after another in hot pursuit of a seat in the WAGC national finals in October.

Noontime rainfall made things more interesting, but in the end, this did little to cool off the eventual winners in each of the five divisions.

Division 5 saw the long-hitting Aldous Keith Mojica stamp his class with a net score of 68, squeaking by Mark Sta. Maria (net 71) and Lorencio Lim (net 72).

In Division 4, the steady all-around game of Jeff Co (net 65) propelled him to an easy 6-stroke victory over Jon Santico.

Jared Sto. Tomas, showing steel nerves, eked out the Division 3 win with a 1-stroke victory (net 66) over the triple logjam of Manuel Bakunawa, Roberto Iliscupidez. Jr., and Julius Magallanes.

Division 2 provided the most drama for the day. 18 holes were not enough for Darwin Mago and Blue Recto as they played nip-and-tuck throughout the round to end up with indentical net 70s that needed a “count-back” playoff. The playoff saw Mago barely escaping with the win by a single stroke.

In Division 1, Abraham Avena (net 71) needed a blistering 34 on the back nine to roll past the front nine leader, Lisandro Opulencia, to snare the division with a 3-stroke victory.

And so, five more winners march on to this year’s national finals. Given the excitement of this 2nd qualifier, we’re pretty sure the next qualifying tournaments will just be as exciting, if not more exciting.

Special thanks again to the Assumption Antipolo Batch ’92 Golf Committee for doing an Amazing job. Overall, the tournament was run very professionally and everyone left happy. Each participant also got several free giveaways including a free branded golf hat and tons of raffle prizes courtesy of their sponsors.

USEC Commemorates 4th of July with “Fore”works

The United States Embassy Club (USEC) celebrated the U.S. Independence Day in special fashion with The 8th Annual 4th of July U.S. Independence Day Charity Golf Tournament last July 4. Held at The Orchard Golf & Country Club in Dasmariñas, Cavite, the tournament was aimed at raising funds for the USEC’s local charities and scholarships.

The festivities kicked off with Steve Kisling, U.S. Embassy Golf Club President, discussing the tournament rules and regulations. This was followed by the ceremonial tee-offs of celebrity actor, Cesar Montano, who crushed his drive down the middle, and Kisling who likewise split the fairway with his shot.

Then came the starting horn to signal the shotgun start for the rest of the golfers. Playing under the fun 2-man scramble format in the challenging Palmer course, the golfers enjoyed the camaraderie among flight-mates while trying to navigate through each tricky hole.

Perhaps just as enjoyable as the round itself was the buffet feast prepared by the USEC for all their guests which featured a fusion of American, European and Asian cuisine with unlimited Heinekens to wash them down.

A major highlight of the event was the presence of U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Y. Kim, who welcomed all the participants during the luncheon, prompting a lot of photo opportunities with eager golfers. And just as it is for every tournament, the highest point came when the tournament winners were announced.

All in all, there were 3 tournament awards and 2 fun hole awards given out to these fine golfers:

2-man Scramble Competition
Champion: Jorge Lee & Steven Kisling
Runner-Up: Kuo-Wei Su & Jin Hoon Roh
3rd Place: Herbert Magsino & Justin Magsino

Winners of the Fun Holes:
Longest Drive – Kevin Su, 258 yards off the tee (Palmer Hole #11)
Nearest to the Pin – Diana Kurangil, 13 ft. to the pin (Palmer Hole #5)

Of course there were also exciting raffle prizes that were given out to lucky winners who were all thrilled with the different types of treats they received.

The entire celebration came to a fitting end led by U.S. Embassy Club President Samuel Scott Jackson, bringing the curtains down on this year’s action and fun-packed 4th of July celebration.

The USEC would like to thank all the generous sponsors and donors that made this whole event possible. Here’s looking at next year’s fireworks!!

Philippines To Host The Next Asia Golf Tourism Convention

All the participants brought home a raffle prize (some had more!) in the well-organized affair, but of course, just like in any tournament, it was still the winning players on the fairway who basked in the spotlight.

The UP Pan Xenia Fraternity Foundation, Inc. and the UP MBA Alumni Society, Inc. would like to thank the following sponsors who generously supported this event: co-presenter Camella homes; major sponsors GolfPH, Inc., Quickminds Corporation, PR Savings Bank; regular sponsors Novellino Wines and Philippine Daily Inquirer.

About Pan Xenia:

The Pan Xenia Fraternity was founded and organized in May 7, 1919 by a group of students and businessmen from the State University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. It was designed to encourage the highest forms of business relationships and goodwill among its members. Due to its meritorious aims and to the extensive business interests of its members, it did not take long before chapters were established in almost all states of the United States. The more prominent are those in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Columbia (South Carolina), and Richmond with headquarters at their respective state universities.

On September 23, 1923, Dr. Macy Skinner, then professor at the University of Washington, seat of the Mother Alpha Chapter, founded the Philippine Alpha Chapter in the University of the Philippines Diliman. Chosen professors of the School of Business Administration of the State University were inducted as associate members. Professor Fermin Tecson Francisco was designated as the first local adviser, and thus, often was referred to as the “Grand Old Man” of Pan Xenia Philippine Alpha Chapter. The few selected members who were the first regular Pan Xenians of the new chapter were Francisco Santamaria Jr., Dominador Fargas, Dalton Chen, Antonio Aquino, Anselmo Trinidad, Juan D. Quintos, and Manuel Rustia.

The full name of the Fraternity is Pan Xenia International Professional Foreign Trade Fraternity. The Greek word Pan means “all-embracing”, and the Greek word Xenia means “goodwill”. Put together, Pan Xenia signifies the conduct of professional community activities on the basis of universal amity. Pan Xenia was intended to encourage the highest forms of business relationships and goodwill among its Members. Thus, it is only appropriate that the phrase “All-embracing goodwill” should be the official motto of the Fraternity. Moreover, Pan Xenia requires of its Members strict adherence to its Four Cardinal Virtues: Honesty and Business Ethics, Knowledge, Caution and Courage, and Appreciation of Human Relationships

About MBA:

The UP MBA Alumni Society, Inc., currently headed by Jun Sabug, was established in 1974. Among its founders were former UP President Alfredo Pascual who was President in 1977-1979, Manny Villar who was president in 1989-1990, and Bimbo Salazar (also the current Chairman of the Pan Xenia Foundation, Inc.) who was President in 2001-2002.
