Coming Changes for Mimosa Golf & Country Club

Mimosa-HI-and-FI

Mimosa Golf & Country Club is an effortlessly gorgeous golf course set on 175 hectares of beautifully landscaped terrain. It was designed on the Mimosa Leisure Estate located in the Clark Freeport Zone where hundreds of tourists come to visit in every season. For years, it has offered golfers a golfing escapade just one hour away from Manila.

The 2 exclusive world class golf courses offer 36 challenging holes over a setting of more than 5,000 different types of trees to ensure peaceful play for all golfers. The beautiful Mountainview course has always been open to any player wanting to enjoy a tranquil round of golf while the Lakeview course is equally stunning and available for all private members. Glistening lakes and subtle bunkers along with breathtaking botanicals help make this place a must-see destination.

Apart from the 2 beautiful golf courses, Mimosa has been successfully operating a hotel of 303 rooms and 34 cozy yet spacious villas under the Holiday Inn brand that guests have considered their ‘home away from home.’

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. As much as we and many of our members at GolfPH admire the resort, we must temporarily bid farewell to the Mimosa Golf & Country Club as they will be under new management. Filinvest Development Corp. has officially been awarded a 25-year-renewable 50 year lease of the former Mimosa Leisure Estate with plans of developing and improving the 201 hectare property.

Though we look forward to the future of the establishment, we know that sadly some of the best, hardworking and dedicated employees that we love will no longer be there. Let’s hope that Filinvest will be creating a better Mimosa with more opportunity for those that live in the Clark-Angeles area.

The resort and golf course operations will be ceasing operations on June 23, 2016 with no guaranteed date as to when it is to re-open. While waiting, we can only hope that the incomparable course will become operational soon for all golfers to enjoy once again.

What is golf for you? It is a game of great skill. It requires concentration and precision. It is about focus, achieving proper forms and developing effective swings. But did you know it is also a social sport?

Golf is just as much about camaraderie as it is about the game itself! Playing alone can be enjoyable, but all golfers know there is nothing like being surrounded by good company throughout their rounds.

Being a part of a golf league gives beginners and advanced golfers a place to have loads of fun, improve their skill, and build great friendships!

With our new monthly series Social Golf Clubs in the Philippines, learn all about different golf leagues around you and how you can be a part of them.

This month, we are featuring the ByltAx golf club.

Byltax-HI

What Is The ByltAx Golf Club?

ByltAx Systems is a company that makes photos for the fashion industry in Sweden. Aside from that, ByltAx has a golf group of happy golfers that play locally and internationally.

They meet together once a week to play, but they are mostly about friendship and gathering together with the common desire to enjoy golf and good company. Most of its members are European businessmen  that are either visiting or have relocated to the Philippines.

Byltax 4

What Is Their Purpose?

To have fun! There are groups of golfers that meet together with the central goal of becoming a better golfer, but ByltAx exists to give golfers the chance to play together and offers camaraderie to those who want it.

How Long Have They Existed?

Some of the ByltAx members started playing together in tournaments back in the early 90’s! They have formally been playing together under the name ByltAx for more than 12 years.

What Keeps Them Successful?

Some members of this group are complete beginners, and some are very experienced. It consists of players of all levels. It isn’t their special or advanced skill that keeps them successful, it is the friendship among them that keeps them going strong.

More than a group of golfers, ByltAx is a group of friends. It is important to them to always have an atmosphere of fun.

Byltax 2

Why Would Golfers Want to Join?

In the words of the head of the club, “because it’s fun!” They definitely have their serious moments, especially when playing in tournaments and competing for prizes, but they clearly emphasize their need to have a good time above all.

ByltAx also holds their own tournaments once a month with other organizations including the Scandinavian golf group. Not only do they play locally, but they also travel together to participate in tournaments abroad as well.

One major reason any golfer would want to join? After playing, they always make it a point to eat out together! Hanging out and enjoying each others company is a must.

Byltax 3

What Makes Its Members Special?

This group is special because they consist mostly of Swedish traveling businessmen, but they are open for all golfers.

Some come and play with the group whenever they’re in the country, some in different seasons when career doesn’t take too much of their time, and even locals that just want to enjoy come together to play with them also.

How Can I Join the Club?

If you want to be a part of this fun club, all you have to do is give them a call. There is no application, no screening process, all they require is that you are a joy to play with. Cheaters? Sandbaggers? You will not be welcomed to this group. If you’re a golfer just looking to enjoy the game with the least stress, they will be glad to offer you fun rounds of golf and great friendship!

Phenomenal Woman, Outstanding Event- Councilor Daisy G. Reyes’ 3rd Golf Cup

featured-councilor-daisy-g-reyes-3rd golf-cup

It was a beautiful Tuesday morning on May 17, 2016, and we arrived at Valley Golf and Country Club around 7am and were greeted by signs directing us to the Councillor Daisy G. Reyes 3rd Golf Cup.

2

An accomplished woman, Councillor Daisy Garcia Reyes is a Filipino beauty queen, film and television actress, singer, TV-host, politician and businesswoman who finds the time to put on this wonderful golf tournament.

1

We started at the bag drop and proceeded straight to the spacious men’s locker room. We were each issued large lockers and went ahead to get changed and settle into our golf gear. The customary pre-match joking ensued with a healthy dose of trash talking on the side.

IMG_0157

As we all got ready, we headed over to the registration to get checked in and collect our flights. It was a nice setup and as we moved down the line, we purchased the ever necessary Mulligans and business card raffle. With Nike as a sponsor, we definitely wanted to put our card in for a chance at some fantastic Nike golf prizes.

With grumbling bellies, we went to the breakfast area to fill up for the day. We chose from meals of egg and rice, with longganisa, tapa, corned beef or stewed pork. I went with the other option of arroz caldo and a coffee to start the day off right!

breakfast

With full stomachs, full of anticipation and anxious to get the day’s competition on the way, we picked up our golf cart and headed out to our starting hole to await the ceremonial tee-off with the backdrop of the gorgeous green Valley golf course.

5

Even with the warm weather, we couldn’t help but appreciate the beauty of Valley Golf & Country club with its hilly layout and gorgeous views.

IMG_0175

Upon smashing a brilliant first drive, we headed to our holes to get started. It was a hot sunny morning already and we got off to a bit of a rusty start as we did not go to the driving range. But a few strokes in, we found our swings and in time for the second hole which was a Par 3 and Hole-In-One competition. While we all did not make it even close to the ping, we were having a blast and the trash talking was in full swing!

IMG_0234

The competition carried on thru the front nine and as our pride was bruised, we laughed it off to a good day of friendly competition and vowed for a rematch soon.

IMG_0248

We headed back to the clubhouse to get a well deserved cold Bear Beer, one of the more refreshing sponsors of the tournament. The strong lager was working its magic on my tired body, and soon I was on cloud nine with good company around.

After a competitive game in the morning’s heat, we were all ready for a hearty lunch. We made a dash for the showers before the award ceremony started and got back in time for Councillor Reyes’ thank you speech before grubbing. She graciously thanked the 100 or so golfers for participating and for the generous sponsors for their support.

IMG_0262

Then it was finally eating time!

IMG_0266

The most anticipated part of the lunch started off with the raffle prizes, and the prizes went on from Nike hats, to golf balls, to gift certificates and finally the airfare to Europe! The trophies were beautifully designed in a way that resembled the Councilor Daisy herself.

Everyone sat on the edge of their seats hoping for their names to be called for the major prizes and awards.

Overall, it was a wonderful day of golf and friends and we headed back home satisfied.

Thank you Councilor Daisy Reyes and to all the special sponsors for providing a day full of golfing fun for a great cause!

Ask the Pro – Simple Drill to Make Swing on Plane During Takeaway

Ask-the-pro-Q&A-with-Dan-Sais

Ask The Pro is an ongoing series where all our readers get to ask US PGA Professional of 20 years and certified golf instructor Dan Sais, all their questions and hear directly from him to help better their skill at golf. Be sure to stay tuned each month to see if your question was answered! Click Here for last Months Post!

MARK L.: I am 6’4 and constantly struggle with my posture at address. Would you offer have any advice/tips on how tall/straight I should stand while addressing the ball?

DAN SAIS: Hi Mark L, being a taller player you might always have trouble with your posture at address. Having worked with taller players in the past, the first thing I do is check the length of the club – does it it need to be longer and for someone of your height?

I would suggest getting properly fitted for your clubs if you have not done so.  This might solve the posture issue and if you still have trouble, please send a video.

LLOYD L.: I used to be a fairly good putter but have somehow lost my skill and having a hard time getting it back. How can I work on improving my putting stroke?

DAN SAISHi Lloyd L, check your setup and alignment first to make sure the poor stroke is not coming from those two things.  Once you have done that work on your path of your stroke and make it consistent.

Also, check your speed to ensure you are getting the ball past the hole about 10-15 inches.  Actually, putting is all about confidence and once you start seeing the ball go in the hole your confidence will come back.

FRED M.: What drills can I work on to make sure my swing is on plane in the beginning of the takeaway?

DAN SAISHi Fred M, a simple drill to ensure the takeaway is on path is to push back with the left shoulder and bring the club parallel to the ground and the butt end of the club is pointing straight down the target line.

Make sure the toe is straight up in this position and this will ensure a better overall backswing.  Use a practice drill for this similar to Rickie Fowler and Mike Weir to understand better.

ERIK: When I hit my drives, it’s a solid 270… But I am very inconsistent. What am I doing wrong?

DAN SAIS: Hi Erik,  check your balance at address as this is the major problem you have.  Your setup with a driver should be 50/50 front to back, and 60% of your weight on your right side and 40% on your left side at the address position with driver.  You currently have too much of your weight leaning forward on your toes and that’s why you lose your balance after your swing.

You also have very fast hands which is just getting you into trouble.  In other words, use your bigger muscles to generate power such as your core and shoulders.  Once you start to be in balance and slow down your backswing you will gain more consistent drives.

Is your golf game getting pretty stressful?

Well, if you have an issue that you can’t seem to figure out, feel free to send Dan a question and we’ll try to feature it on our next issue. There’s no answer too small or dumb. Plus it’s free.

No matter the skill level, we want to hear from you. To ask a question, email us at admin@golfph.com or leave a question or comment below.

Or… if you would like to book an appointment with Dan, you can contact him directly at 0917 562 1134. Thanks!

Who Are The Travelers?

The Travelers golf group is one of the very few fully functioning clubs in Villamor Golf Club. It was originally formed by free masons, hence their clever name. Though this very active group still goes by The Travelers, their members are now made up of mostly non-masons. Together they have a heart not only to golf, but to serve.

This small group that was founded by Ben Tan has held 3 major fundraising events to benefit medical missions, has organized gift-giving events for the less fortunate street kids, and has even helped raise awareness for Red Cross.

This is a group from ages 27 all the way up to 70 whose common denominator is simply the love of golf!

IMG_5988

What Is Their Purpose?

The Travelers is an official BIR registered organization complete with a set of officers, a tournament committee, and a membership committee that participates in all Villamor tournaments. With all the help they give, they stress their desire to exist in order to:

  • Spread the game of golf in the Philippines
  • Improve and help golfers love golf more
  • Help golfers grow in their skill at the game
  • Help others find their undiscovered passion for golf

How Long Have They Existed?

They have formally been operating as an organization for 5 years.

What Keeps Them Successful?

Though they are not the biggest group, they are certainly one of the most active. What’s their secret? Members of the group are specially handpicked through screening. Their value isn’t on quantity, but rather on quality.

IMG_5788

Why Would Golfers Want To Join?

Golfers who join The Travelers are sure to enjoy the great bond of friendship between many different personalities. If you are serious about wanting to become a better golfer, helping others, and building awesome friendships, there’s no better group than this one!

What Makes Its Members Special?

The Travelers are dedicated to picking only the very best for the better good of all its members, making everyone who is able to join uniquely special.

IMG_5984

Not only are they handpicked, but they have great friendships! Together they enjoy monthly celebrations of the members’ birthdays with all expenses paid by the club. How much more fun can that be?

How Can I Join The Club?

Simply join The Travelers tee-time every Sunday from 5:30am to 11:30am. Everybody is welcome! Though they are particular with their members, they are very open to socialization. After playing, just approach one of them and let them know you’re interested.

Set the date in your calendar and join The Travelers next Sunday!

Golfing With A Purpose: The 18th Sagip Buhay Golf Classic

sagip1

This year marked the 18th Sagip Buhay Golf Classic where beginners and professionals alike took to the formidable golf course of the Villamor Golf Club on this Wednesday morning.

While the event was filled with a wide range of anticipation from both men and women of varying levels of golfing experience, the event’s purpose was to help raise funds for patients of the Philippine General Hospital.

sagip4

The Sagip Buhay offers help and hope to a number of individuals who are unable to meet their own medical needs. Every year, they hold a number of charity events to help provide much needed medical attention to patients and their families to relieve some of their stress and burdens while fighting through their difficult times.

Translated, Sagip Buhay means ‘to save lives’ and they have been providing medication to many patients of the Philippine General Hospital of both the Medicine Wards and the ICU’s.

sagip2

Participants paid for a ticket to be able to take part in the golfing tournaments and with each ticket sold, the foundation was able to put the donations to good use. Tournament entries included caddy service, lunch and a loot bag stock with a variety of samples and goodies to remember the day by.

With each sponsored hole, a patient with lupus will be provided three cycle doses of steroids. This treatment is a life-saving procedure that many suffering from lupus can rarely afford. The donations also went towards funding pacemaker insertion for those who have been affected by heart rhythm problems.

sagip3

Patients suffering from pneumonia will be able to benefit from an additional two days of mechanical ventilation that is needed to help cure and treat their symptoms.

The Sagip Buhay Medical Foundation does not only hold golfing tournaments. There are a number of other events that you can get involved with to help out with their cause. The Rx: A work of HeART is a fashion show the put on for the patients of the 1st and 3rd wards at the Philippine General Hospital.

sagip

Another event they hold to help is hosting the PSBIM review every year to help prepare those taking the PSBIM exam. On top of that, they provide cardiac life support training every month in partnership with the PUSONG PINOY foundation.

sagip7

Sagip Buhay Medical Foundation even holds private movie screenings of some of the latest new movie releases. Participants purchase a ticket which includes a snack, drink, and a raffle entry while also taking the opportunity to help provide life-saving medication to those in need.

sagip5

This foundation has been providing much needed medical help for those less fortunate. A simple donation can, in fact, save a life of the many patients the foundation assists. Most of these patients cannot afford even the basic treatments such as those to ward off the effects of pneumonia.

Several of these well-deserving patients suffer from a life-threatening illness that can be easily treated but the families are just unable to provide for it. The Sagip Buhay Foundation accepts donations in both pesos and dollars directly from the website:http://www.sagipbuhay.com.

FORE!

The recently concluded Adstratworld Foundation, Inc. (AFI) Golf Tournament for-a-cause held at Villamor Air Base Golf Club last July 1 was indeed a blessing that exceeded our expectations.

Tee-off was scheduled at 11AM and yet as early as 9AM troupe by troupe of golf enthusiasts came flooding the registration area.

A simple awarding ceremony with a little fun and entertainment followed at VABGC Social Hall where every attendees’ eyes glittered with happiness as each winner march towards the stage for their awards and raffle prizes.

afi-photos

One big moment during the evening fellowship was the presentation of AVPs of AFI’s scholars who each gave their hearts out acknowledging and thanking everyone for extending alms to them.

The night was capped with everyone going home feeling fulfilled and accomplished knowing they’ve been an instrument to one great deed.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation to our sponsors who supported us in this endeavor: Megafiber, Massimo Philko, Chooga Juice, Healthy Family, Longga Taps, Bear Beer, Pascual Laboratories (C-Lium Fibre), PharmaRex (Cortal Pain), Anischa Salon & Cafe, Dyna Drug Corp (Checkhup), Novuhair, Timberpro, Asiatravel.com, JB Sports, Anagen, Sante Barley, Goldilocks, Ayala Land Premier and Cathay Land (South Forbes).

YGHH 5

Who Is YGHH?

What exactly does YGHH stand for, you ask? This group calls themselves the Young Guns and Hard Hitters which is exactly what they are. Made up of men in their early 20’s to early 30’s, YGHH proves that for them, golfing is more than relaxing!

YGHH 3

What Is Their Purpose?

YGHH exists to enjoy golf at it’s finest as a social sport, and to continue growth in their skill by holding their very own tournament once a year. Every June, they come together for their annual YGHH Golf Cup.

YGHH 2YGHH 1

How Long Have They Existed?

This group of yuppies began with 5 golf enthusiasts that share their life-long love of golf and their common goal to simply just have fun. After meeting at gatherings and parties, they officially began playing together as a group just a little over one year ago.

What Keeps Them Successful?

In just one year, this gleeful group of youngsters has grown from a mere 5 members to 30! What’s their secret? Exposure, exposure, and more exposure. They’ve met several of their members at tournaments, outings, and even through different groups.

Golf is of course a major part of their existence, but more than that, they put a premium on friendships and bonding. After each tournament or just a round of golf, they all look forward to spending a night out for fun together.

YGHH 4

Why Would Golfers Want To Join?

YGHH believes that players would want to join because it is more fun with the youth! For them, physical age is relative depending on how one lives their life. For the young in age and the young at heart, there’s no better group for you than this one.

YGHH 6

What Makes Its Members Special?

Though this group isn’t particular with gathering the exceptionally skilled golfers, they take pride in each member being exceptionally good at having fun, on the course and off the course!

How Can I Join The Club?

Ask the pro QA with Dan Sais

Ask The Pro is an ongoing series where all our readers get to ask US PGA Professional of 20 years and certified golf instructor Dan Sais, all their questions and hear directly from him to help better their skill at golf. Be sure to stay tuned each month to see if your question was answered!

RAYMOND V: I noticed while watching the British Open that most pro golfers don’t wear sunglasses? Why is that?

sunglasses

DAN: Hi Raymond V – very good question!  When I was a touring professional I rarely wore sunglasses.  For me it threw my depth perception off a little and would alter some of my sight lines especially on the greens.

If I did wear them it was only while on the fairway in between shots.  As for the Open Championship, the weather and the sun where the factors why you didn’t see too many wearing sunglasses.  Usually the case in Scotland and the UK.

JERRY G: Sometimes my divots start at 6 whole inches behind the ball.. Do you have any tips on how I can stop hitting behind it?

grass-1286626_640

DAN: Hi Jerry G – This is a common flaw, but also a complicated one.  One of the reasons could be your balance at address.  I would recommend putting more weight on your left side at address as this should change your angle of attack coming into the ball.

Keep your ball position constant and more in the middle of your stance with your irons.

JIM C: Hey Dan, I’ve been making good contact with the ball, but I’ve been hitting it on the toe of my club. What can I do to help hit it properly?

golf-881332_640

DAN: Hi Jim C – I probably need to correct your statement of “I’ve been making good contact” straight away.  To be honest if you’re hitting it on the toe of the club, you’re not making good contact.  We have to hit the ball on the center of the clubface to be making good contact.

With that being said, It would be rather difficult to tell without seeing it live or on video but my best answer would be is you’re probably losing your spine angle on your down swing.

Stay flexed with your knees and hold your posture in place as you swing the club to the finish. This will allow you hit on the center of the clubface rather than pulling up and out of your spine angle.  Please send me a video and so I can analyze further.

PAUL H: Hi Dan, what is an exceptional golf tournament you would recommend players joining? Do you have any preferred ones?

DAN: There are so many golf tournaments here in the Philippines and I am partial to the ones that give something back to the community and or charity events.  I have had the pleasure of hosting and directing several and I find it particularly rewarding.

In my opinion, one of the best and largest ones is the BRAFE Golf Tournament. The tournament organizers have really professionalized the charity golf tournament experience.  It has been ongoing for the last ten years and has raised an enormous amount of money for young scholars.

June 2016: Ask The Pro: Simple Drill To Make Swing On Plane During Takeaway

May 2016: Help I Can’t Get Rid Of This Slice!

JOSEPH M.: After swinging the club, my divot is square at the beginning then veers left. Usually what ends up happening is my ball goes a bit left of my target. What seems to be the problem?

DAN SAIS: Hi Joseph M., this is actually a common flaw and but very difficult to fix.  Most of the time this is caused by starting the downswing with arms and or hands.  We call it “over the top” or “outside to in” downswing path.

All good downswing moves start with the lower body (left hip) and let your arms and hands follow the hips.  A drill for this is to swing the club (on the downswing) on an inside to out swing path and this should help with pulling your shots.

FREDDY C.: I tend to get a lot of back spin on my drives. It literally stops with no roll.

DAN SAIS: Hi Freddy C., sounds like it could be too much loft on the driver and or the wrong shaft for you.  Start with getting on a launch monitor.  This will be able to tell you exactly the ball flight (launch angle) of your driver as well as the “spin ratio”  of the ball.

A good ball flight should be 12-15 deg of launch angle and spin should be around 2500 rpms.  But with that being said  it really depends on the club head speed   If the launch is too high the ball is ballooning in the air and if the spin is over 2500 its probably spinning too much.  Get properly fitted by a good fitter and you can solve this problem.

CHRIS LIAO: I buy used balls on the course all the time because they are cheaper and I tend to lose them quite often. Am I really at a disadvantage?

DAN SAIS: Hi Chris Liao, I always recommend buying new balls vs.used balls.  Here is why:  New balls are made very well these days and are very durable, and you can play several rounds with them.  They also go about 10% to 15% farther than a used ball.  Remember even though they are cheap, used balls will not fly as far and they could be water logged or even have an unseen crack in them.  I know its tempting but spend a little to have that peace of mind.  If you need help with losing your golf balls please contact me and we can setup a lesson to fix that issue.

HENRY CHAN: Hey Dan, I get the right distance that I want from my drives but I can’t seem to get rid of this slice. Here’s an example of one of my drives at Valley. What am I doing wrong?

DAN SAIS: Hi Henry, I hope I can answer your question and get you some help with your slice off the tee.

  • Setup – your setup and posture are quite good and athletic.  Keep this same setup always with the driver.
  • Takeaway – your driver goes back with your hands and to the inside very quickly.  Remember: the left shoulder should start the swing and take it back slower.
  • Top of the swing – too long of a backswing is causing the slice.  If you see the driver out of your left eye on the backswing – its too long.
  • Downswing – maintain a good posture throughout the swing and you wont lose the club face and positions of your body thus causing you to lose your balance sometimes.

Overall – The driver is the hardest club to hit and even harder to control (its the longest club).  Follow these simple keys and you will be hitting the driver better soon!

April 2016: How To Deal With Sandbaggers

Wouldn’t we all like to know the untold secrets and most effective tips on how to improve our skill at what has been deemed one of the world’s most difficult sports- golf?

Thankfully, Dan doesn’t keep his secrets untold. He wants to share with us all that he can to improve the game of golf as a whole, and even for each individual player to excel in his game and enjoy it even more!

Once a month, we bring you that special privilege exclusively at GolfPH as we give you the chance to ask your own specific questions and have them personally answered by certified golf instructor and US PGA golf professional of 20 years, Dan Sais.

Read on to see if your question has been featured this month.

MIGUEL ANTONIO: Does distance of swing speed slow down with age? Does lack of practice cause it? I am presently using D. Leadbetter swing-setter.

DAN SAIS: Hi Miguel, a good question and hopefully I can help..  I think that age, flexibility and improper movements, certainly plays a factor with the distance and loss of it. Practice will help but the proper practice.  A good teacher can educate you on the proper path of your driver and gain more distance.

Once you have the path down then we can increase your flexibility with your core muscles and then start work on your club head speed.  The ratio between club head speed and distance is;

1 mph = 2.5 yards

That means if we can increase your club head speed by 10 mph we can increase your distance by 25 yards.  If you combine that with a properly fitted driver then there is no telling how how much you can increase your distance.

If we can increase your club head speed by 10 mph we can increase your distance by 25 yards

ANDREW SY: Help, I am an absolute beginner and have trouble getting contact with the ball. I have a tournament coming up in 2 weeks that I want to do well in. What’s a quick hack that will get me a good straight 100 yards down the fairway every time?

DAN SAIS: Hi Andrew, first I want to thank you for taking up this great game of golf.  What I recommend is you start off with a three fairway metal instead of a driver.

A driver might go farther but what you need is a straighter ball flight and its easier to do that with a 3 fairway metal.  Choke down slightly on the grip and with a nice, smooth tempo try and swing through the ball.

Please do not try to kill it as this will only frustrate you.  I am sure once you work on this at the driving range you will be ready for your tournament.

sandbagger

BUBUY BALANGUE: What is your take on the perennial issue of sandbagging? How can we minimize if not totally eliminate it?

DAN SAIS: Hi Bubuy, the subject of sandbagging here in the Philippines has been well documented and talked about for awhile now.

As stated before we have to get the governing bodies to back this project such as the NGAP and The Federation of Golf Clubs.  Once they are involved we can implement a standard criteria for each player who holds an official registered handicap with their respective golf club.  It needs to be monitored closely and any anomalies or improper scores should and will cause suspicion.

It should be a three step process if found guilty of cheating.

  • Written Warning – the governing bodies will serve a written warning to them personally and their golf club where the handicap is established.  Put them on notice.
  • Suspension – if a golfer persists to not adhering to the rules of golf, suspend them for a period of six months from posting a handicap at their club and any competition that requires a handicap.
  • Publishing – once a golfer has been warned, and suspended previously their names should be published at every golf club in the country.  A unified list of offenders should be enough deterrent to help them understand that there are rules they have to follow.

This will be tough in the beginning but once all golfers know the new rules with posting handicaps, they will follow.  I am sure of that!

March 2016: The Most Common Mistake Players Make

Have you ever spent countless hours on the internet, searching for an answer to your specific golfing queries without any luck? Or perhaps wanted to try new golf equipment, accessories, or tricks, but didn’t know if it was right for you? For some of us, even wishing to learn tips straight from a professional has been a distant wish.

But now here is your chance!

We’re excited to bring you the first of many segments from our new series: Q&A with a Pro. Here is your opportunity to ask all your questions and hear directly from a pro! Stay tuned with us every month to see if your question was featured and answered. Who is this PGA Professional and certified golf instructor we’ll be hearing from? Read on to know more from Dan the man himself.

We at GolfPH have worked with you for the past couple of years, but for those out there who don’t know you… Can you tell us about yourself?

Dan: I’m Daniel Sais and I am from Florida, USA. I’ve been a US PGA golf professional for the last 20 years. During that span I was a on tour for 5 years and I currently live in the Philippines now full time.

What have been your major accomplishments as a golfer?

Dan: As a touring professional, I played regularly on the PGA Tour, nationwide and in the Asian Omega Tours so that was quite the experience. I got to compete with some of the best in the game, travel the world and live out my dream. But my latest accomplishment is founding Esquire Golf Management back in 2008.

What is Esquire Golf Management?

Dan: Esquire Golf Management is a company that specializes in golf course management operations to help educate golf course owners on how to maintain an effective, cost efficient operation. I have experience with golf course design and construction and have worked as a Director of Golf and General Manager at several private country clubs.

What work did you leave behind in Florida and what brought you to the Philippines?

Dan: In Florida, I was working as a Head Golf Professional and Director of Instruction for several prestigious golf courses and resortsI began traveling here to the Philippines back in 1990, then I finally moved here with my wife Carmela in 2010. She’s involved with the BPO sector here and is the Vice President for an American company based in BGC.

With all your success and accomplishments, is there anything else you aspire for?

Dan: I would love to work with the local pros who really need coaching on the fundamentals of teaching and helping their own students and players. I feel the need to share my knowledge with other golf pro’s so we can keep this great game of golf alive here in this country. His unselfish style of sharing is uncommon and he claims it’s all about giving back to the game.

Dan recently opened his own golf academy called Esquire Golf Learning Center.  He is focused on teaching and educating players on the golf swing fundamentals and specializes in the mental side of golf, which is untapped territory here in the Philippines.

What do you think is special about your teaching style and what makes it different from others?

Dan: I would have to say that my teaching style is different because it doesn’t just come from years of practice, but from many years of studying and learning from the game’s greatest teachers.

His education from the PGA of America has also helped him understand the golf swing and its effects on ball flight, root cause and effect and how it relates to the individual student. “I work strictly on the fundamentals as should be taught to all players.”

His philosophy is simple, “Get on the same communication level as your student and they will understand and learn far more better and faster.” His style is laid back and low key and exudes a quiet confidence when he is on the teaching tee.

What is the most common mistake that you see players make and what can they do to work on it?

Dan: The most common mistakes players make is they simply do not understand the game and how to play it properly.  What that means is the basic understanding of the game and how to make the fewest amount of strokes. There are actually two reasons why they don’t understand. They are:

  • Practicing proficiently
  • Warming up properly

Practicing properly means to understand what, how much, and when to practice.  Most players do not follow a basic practice regimen.  They have a tendency to go to the driving range and practice what they are good at and try to groove a swing, in other words they just beat balls and break a sweat. They also do not practice by the percentages of the game.

When I teach on most of the driving ranges I see the majority of the practice of being done with the driver.  Do you know that the driver is only hit a max of 12-13 times in the course of 18 holes?  That is only 8% of the game.  Conversely, the putter is used on every hole, on every green but I hardly see anyone practice putting.  Most amateur players average 36-38 putts per round which makes up for 42% of the game.  This is just poor management of their games.  Follow my advice, practice your putting if you want to score, because the game is ultimately about the final score.

Warming up properly means you should stretch all your muscles that you use to play golf.  Start off slow with your warm up, hit short irons then long irons and then on to the hybrids and fairway woods.  End with the driver and do not hit more than 15 practice shots with the driver.  Once completed move on to the short game practice area and then finish with putting.  A little known stat is –  from 100 yards to the hole makes up for 67% percent of the game.  That is two thirds of the game of golf.  A warm up is just that, a plan to warm up the body in order to play, its not a practice session where you should be working on your swing, or trying to play shots. The goal with warming up is simple, get the body loose and tension free.  I see so many players today that do not follow these principles and have a basic understanding of the game.

Play the game of golf by the percentages and follow these tips to play better golf and lower your scores.

Now that you know all about Dan, take this rare opportunity and ask away!

North Country Golf Course – Of all the golf courses in Japan, only a selected few can boast fully vented turf, and North Country is one of them. This world-class course flawlessly combines the beauty of Augusta with the difficulty of St. Andrews, yet still keeps it’s unique flare with the added challenge of having no gimmicks. The excellence of this 18 hole par 72 course landed it the privilege of proudly hosting the first 2 Sega Sammy Golf Tournaments 2 years in a row along with the Nagashima Shigeo Invitational SegaSammy Cup Golf Tournaments 8 years in a row! North Country Golf Course

Eniwa Country Club – This exceptional golf course has rightfully earned it’s spot at the high number of 46 on the list of Japan’s top 100 golf courses. With its constant popularity in and out of season, early reservations are always recommended. Golfers take delight in playing at Eniwa as each hole and hazard lies on a fairly flat forest where all fairways are lined by virgin white birch trees. Most hazards like the ponds and bunkers can easily be seen from the tee grounds, but the much undulated greens require a precise and accurate approach to every shot, keeping players at the top of their game. Not only has Eniwa been frequented by many golfers, but even professional tournaments have chosen this place as their venue- including the Japan Professional Golfers Championship!

What Is JCI Manila?

JCI Manila is a premiere leadership development organization that has been around for almost 70 years. This is where young men come with the goal of becoming better leaders. Dubbed as the University of Leaders, JCI Manila believes that it is through reaching out to others that you learn more about yourself.

With this goal in mind, they delve into an array of projects such as community development, business, government, environment and more. The unifying force behind these seemingly diverse projects is a group of young men who want to become better leaders.

JCI Manila Ryder Cup

One of their biggest projects annually is the The JCI Manila Ryder Cup. This was established in the year 2011 by their Past President Rodney Dizon, JCI Senator Glenn Chan and Past Director David Sy and is held every year as a fundraising activity for their community development projects.

Born out of the desire to have an avenue where they could play competitive golf with one another, the Ryder Cup started with a mere 26 players. Now being on its 6th year, it has grown up to 100 players! In just a short amount of time, the tournament has grown dramatically.

What Makes The JCI Manila Ryder Cup So Special?

This tournament stands out from the rest as it intentionally tests every player’s skills with different formats. As the name suggests, the format of the tournament patterns itself with the PGA Ryder cup. This 4 leg tournament takes place on 4 different courses where formats like scramble, best ball, and singles matchplay are played to keep the game competitive and exciting!

The JCI Manila Ryder Cup was brought about a special brotherhood that is a tenement of JCI. Because of this, the number of participants significantly increased and because a great avenue for members, new and old, to get to know one another better.

Usually golf is an individual sport, but in this case it is a team event and because of this, players get to experience the growth of camaraderie amongst them as the tournament progresses.

What Makes It So Popular?

Another reason why the JCI Manila Ryder Cup became so big is because it gives the players value for money. With the 20,000Php fee, each player is sure to get a handful of awesome things in return.

Besides the usual golf giveaways, the players are also given a personalized gift, golf lessons by pros, driving range training days, overnight accommodations, and an awards night with lots of entertainment, good food and tons of raffle prizes! Everyone goes home a winner regardless of the outcome of the tournament.

What Makes It So Important?

Through this project and with the help of all the sponsors, JCI Manila is able to raise a substantial amount to fund its  endless community development projects. Each of these projects aim to lend a helping hand for the less fortunate who are in need of help.

The JCI Manila Ryder Cup doesn’t only spell out fun for you, it gives you the grand opportunity to give back to your community.

2016 JCI Manila Ryder Cup

This year’s the JCI Manila Ryder cup was headed by Chairman John Bautista Jr. together with his Co-Chairmen Brainard Hao and JR Francisco.  It featured 2 teams: Team Panels headed by Team owner 2012 JCI Manila President Rodney Dizon and Team Delta headed by 2015 VP Nino Namoco which go against each other again this year for the much coveted JCI Manila Ryder Cup trophy.

The tournaments this year were played at Clark Sun Valley Golf and Country Club (April 2, 2016), FA Korea Golf and Country Club (April 16, 2016), Luisitia Golf and Country Club (April 29, 2016) and Royal Northwoods Golf and Country Club (April 30, 2016).

The players were greeted by a store set-up by our partner sponsor Titleist / Footjoy where-in the players got their Footjoy team shirts, Footjoy dry caps, personalized Footjoy duffle bags and Footjoy golf shoes.

Also, each player was given additional giveways on each tournament day like umbrellas, driver head covers and even Rayban headphones!

And after all the tournament legs, all the players were treated to sumptuous meals paired with Glenmorangie Single Malt and Bear Beer.

The competition was fierce during this year and we saw Team Panels edge out TeamDelta Plus by only 4.5 points to win this years JCI Manila Ryder Cup tournament.

For the past 2 years these teams have battled it out and have won one each so watch out for the 7th JCI Manila Ryder Cup and see who comes out on top and be the winner of this grudge match!
