5 Power Techniques for Women Golfers

$
0
0

Just because you’re a woman doesn’t mean you can’t hit far with your club and play golf with men. With constant practice and the use of some helpful exercises, you can definitely go the distance and wow any gentleman. Here are five power techniques that can help you gain a few more yards off the tee

GO FOR A SWING.

Practice your swing at the range and use your driver and woods more often. Keep in mind that you’ll be hitting with these clubs more than you will with your 5- or 6- iron. Also, try to swing your clubhead a few inches off the ground. This allows you to swing more around your body and helps you add distance and increase your speed.

ALLOW FOR MORE SPACE.

For a big and powerful swing, hold your driver a little far from your body. Be sure that your stance is wide enough and that you shift your weight on your right side. The end of your club should be at least an open-hand’s distance from your body.

SWEEP THROUGH IT.

Instead of hitting down the ball, try to sweep it off the tee for more distance and accuracy in your shot. Practice this by teeing up a little more in front than your usual ball position, then hit with your drivers. You will notice that your arms are extending through the impact, sending the ball father and straighter.

NO MORE “CHICKEN WINGS.”

The chicken wing happens when after hitting the ball, your left elbow awkwardly goes up, with your left palm facing the ground and your weight staying at your right side. It is important for you to know that not properly releasing and turning your arm over after you’ve made impact with the ball can cause you to lose distance. “Chicken wings” results in short distance shots and sometimes even causes the ball to go the wrong direction. Keep in mind that a proper release happens when the left palm faces the sky after you’ve hit the ball, and your body weight moves forward in a natural manner.

LISTEN FOR THE “WHOOSH”.

To determine how fast you should swing, try to hold your driver upside down, so that you’ll be holding the shaft at the clubhead part. Afterwards, swing the grip end. Doing that should apparently feel lighter thus allowing you to swing faster with your arms and hands. Now, listen carefully for the “whoosh” sound at the bottom of the swing. You’ll know you’re generating enough speed when you hear it. When you’re done with a few practice swings, you can now turn the club around, hit some balls and see the difference.

GolfPH Course Review: The Splendido Taal Golf Club

$

Who would have thought that a literal mountain hole can turn into a beautiful form of nature? This is exactly what happened with the Splendido Taal Golf Club, wherein a ravine near the Tagaytay ridge was filled with tons of earth, and shaped into what is now the Top 4th golf course to visit in the GolfPH list.

The year 2000 set the stage for a grand golfing experience in the Southern Metro of Manila, mainly in Tagaytay. A four-year construction of shaping and molding the hole transformed into a delightful golf escape. Sporting a Greg Norman design, Splendido Taal not only amazes its players and visitors with wondrous views (of the course, facilities and of course, nearby Taal lake), but exciting and challenging rounds of golf as well.

True indeed, playing at Splendido is not only fulfilling but is also entertaining. The entire course is a good mix of both short and long holes, each with difficulties and highlights of their own. The bunkers are huge and most of the time, holes dogleg from one direction to another.

From the start of your game until the end, Splendido never runs out of surprises and of challenging holes that will really satisfy the golfer in you. To get you a view of the course, here are the features holes that you should watch out for when you play at Splendido.

Hole 1
Hole 1 is a short downhill par-5 and approaching the green willonly take 2 strokes, especially for a long hitter. However, the green can sure be tricky not only because it is well bunkered but reading the ball’s break can be quite difficult as well.

Hole 2
Two is definitely not for the hacker as this 559-yard hole requires a strong hit that can carry the ball as far as 200 yards to hit the fairway which is far left away from the tee– and avoid the ravine.

Hole 4
Even though four is fairly short, this is one of the holes that you should not take for granted. The fairway doglegs to the right just around the ravine and then goes steeply uphill towards the green. When playing this hole, be sure that you have enough club when you reach the heavily bunkered green.

Hole 7
Seven is a hole that would require a strong and steady good shot from the tee to the green. This par 4 may be played straightway but beware for it is littered with traps– a large acacia tree and bunkers set on the left and OB right.

Hole 8
This par 3 hole is also considered a difficult hole on the front side not only because you have to avoid the ravine but you also need to be wary of the two-tiered green that makes it hard to correctly find the putting surface.

Hole 9
The ninth is simply terrifying– this 435 yard hole is not only long but golfers have to play uphill thus making it longer than what it really is.

Hole 13
This is one challenging yet very rewarding hole that needs a huge deal of concentration. In fact you may need to ply this hole several times before you can actually get to play it right. This 425-yard par 4 requires you to dogleg in one of the mountain’s slopes where a large tree and bunkers await, making the hole more difficult.

AMENITIES:
A rustic Spanish-Mediterranean architecture greets visitors to the cozy club. Sporting an open-air ambiance, visitors are sure to also delight themselves to the aroma stemming from the club’s restaurant. The Splendido Taal Golf Club is also known for its gastronomic delight, making it one of the best food stops in Tagaytay. The club is famous for its two restaurants, the Ladera Golfers’ Lounge and the La Esquina Spanish Restaurant.

Splendido Taal Golf Club is a popular venue for weddings. Celebrities have been known to celebrate their special unions in this place. A recent one is of pop-singer Jolina Magdangal and rock drummer Mark Escueta (of Rivermaya).

GolfPH Course Review: Mimosa Golf and Country Club

mimosa4

As a golfer, you’d always want something new and challenging. After all, it’s what makes golf such an exciting sport to play. So if you do find yourself up North from Manila, then you’re in for a treat.

As the Top 5 finisher in the GolfPH list, the Mimosa Golf and Country Club is definitely the premier spot to visit, if you do find yourself North of Manila. With the expansive group of Clark Development Corporation managing the course in the year 1999, any golfer can only expect a truly satisfying experience.

mimosa3

The golf course was built on the original Clark Air Base golf course. After Clark Development Corporation’s management decisions, the original 18-hole course was split into two wonderful courses. The Mountain View Course, the top choice for players – and tournaments – is one of the longest courses to play at in the Philippines, measuring at 7,303 yards. With a picturesque view of majestic hills gracing the course, one can find playing a hassle – just because the surroundings can serve as a grand distraction.

Nature is at its grandest in this club, with over 5,000 different species of trees and plants lining the course. A particular highlight of the course is its famous 100-year old Acacia trees. The all-weather course, designed by prestigious golf architects Robin Nelson and Neal Haworth, only promises a different level of challenge for its players.

Even from the beginning, you will know that playing at Mimosa is not for the fainthearted. It starts with a narrow two par-three holes all located around a hill where the old communications tower of the former American Airbase used to stand.

mimosa2

Here are some of the holes that you should not ‘miss’ when you play at the Mountain View Course.

Hole 3
Hole 3 may only be a short par-4 but this can really be tricky and may require a smart approach into the green. This is not only because the fairway (complete with humps and elevation changes) is narrow but also doglegs to the right just near the base of the hill. No wonder this is considered as one of the most difficult holes in the front side.

Hole 5
Just 543-yards from the tips, this is a breather and can get you a real good score as this par 5 hole can be reached in just two strokes.

Hole 7
At 487-yards from the tips, seven is a fairly difficult par 4. With one-handicap, this hole requires distance and accuracy as the golfer would have to pass through the sandy waste and volcanic ash creek just to reach the fairway.

Hole 13
The par-5 13th is deeemed to be the hardest hole on the back side as the green is set against a water hazard.

Hole 16
The best hole for the Mountain View Course mainly because it’s an island green. But recreational players won’t have to worry as this hole has a wide green and is only 153-yards away from the gold tees.

Hole 18
The round of golf ends with a spectacular uphill par-five where you’d have to move the ball around the old acacia trees– complete with bunkers and traps to frustrate you even at the last shot.

Amenities:
The Mimosa Golf and Country Club caters not only to golfer’s needs and delights. The club is also known for its outstanding facilities, such as function rooms, gym and swimming pool. Weddings are also a popular event in the club, with packages available to suit any soon-to-be husband and wife’s budget. The club’s villas are particularly known for their cozy and modern design, making the club as a top choice place to not only play, but to stay and relax as well.

Another known appeal of the Mimosa Golf and Country Club is its location. Its proximity to nearby places of visit – a PAGCOR managed Casino, Restaurants of different varieties, a nearby Holiday Inn – makes it as a prime landmark on its own.

According to its Golf Operations Head, Ms. Winnie Ventura, the Mimosa Golf and Country Club’s peak season is from October to February of each year. Foreign players are a common sight in the club, with mostly Koreans and Japanese players enjoying their winter vacation in the greens. The course caters to players of a large number, with almost up to 400 players in the busiest of days.

Ms. Ventura has also stated that the club will have further improvements made on its course, once the peak season’s over. This can very well serve as an enticing offer for players to visit the Mimosa Golf and Country Club this 2012.

Pacsports Official Nike VRS Covert Launch Event

Something Cool. An Idea.

This is the easiest part about starting a business or a product. The hardest part is to actually turn that idea into reality, but that’s what Nike did.

In fact, Nike didn’t JUST DO IT…they took action and perfected “it.”

February 15, 2013 marked a very important night for Pacsports (the main distributor of Nike Golf) and the Philippines. Today was the official launch night for the unveiling of the NEW Nike VRS Covert Driver and the NEW Nike RZN Technology golf balls. This showcase was held at the City Golf Driving Range in Ortigas.

The theme of the night…innovation.

pic2

Pacsports is one of the affiliates of the GolfPH Association and we had the great privilege to be led on a direct tour by the Pacsports’ marketing director, Janina. She impressed us by leading our team through an array of activities spanning over free giveaways, a demonstration of the new Nike Covert line, complimentary food and drinks.

pic3

Their golf professionals were also on hand to show us how to correctly adjust and fit this new technology to match our swing speed and style. Nike and Pacsports definitely went above and beyond tonight.

pic4

The evening’s events started with a formal presentation by the Pacsports Nike Brand Manager Jaye Escuardo. He talked about the newest 2013 Nike line of products and showed why these products will be changing the way golf is played. 2 products in particular.

pic5

Product #1: New Golf Balls: 20XI and the Nike One RZN. Both use the new RZN technology, which possesses a special core that is lighter, faster, and more responsive than its competitors. The RZN technology improves 2 critical features of any golf ball: speed and accuracy. As we all know, golfers want to know how to hit farther and with precision. Check Pacsports for more information.

pic6

Product #2: New Driver: Nike VR_S Covert Driver. There are tons of new drivers released every year by over 20 different golf brands, but not all exude the product excellence and creativity that the new Nike VR_S Covert Driver possesses. Billed by Nike as the “most innovate club” they have ever produced, I got a chance to take a look at it first hand and even took few swings at the range.

pic7

The first thing that you notice is this driver is not shaped like every other driver in the market. In fact, the Nike VR_S Covert is the first driver to feature “high-speed cavity back technology” that conforms to USGA and R&A rules.
The driver also features a special patented NexCOR face, which is designed to deliver faster ball speed and longer shots from a wider area of the face.

Lastly, the driver has a FlexLoft system that will allow you to change your loft (8.5-12.5 degrees) and adjust the face angle with just a simple pull, turn and push. Overall, this club allows you to create 15 different options to suit your game and playing conditions. And we all know how having the right fit can improve one’s drive.

Although I had a pretty good feel swinging the new Nike VR_S Covert, more time would be needed to test and adjust the 15 different options of the right loft, fit and angle. Maybe Pacsports will even let me borrow one for a more extensive product review in the future (hint…hint…).

pic8

After the presentation, we were introduced to the latest fleet of Nike Athletes that are using Nike Golf Products.

pic9

Above From Left To Right : Nike Golf Swoosh Staff – Eric Gozo, Cookie La’O, Mikaela Martinez, Miguel Tabuena (Nike Golf Tour Athlete, Southeast Asia), Jaye Escuadro (Brand Manager)

Not to mention these guys who are also using the Nike VRS Covert:

pic10

The night ended with a demoing of the latest drivers and clubs plus food, drinks, and raffle prizes. 2 lucky winners took home a driver (not one of our GolfPH team), and I was fortunate enough to win a Nike shoe bag!

pic11

Overall, the event was a huge success. Congratulations to Janina, the marketing head of Pacsports and Jaye, Nike Golf Brand Manager, for a job well done. I expect big things to come from Nike and for Pacsports. Please visit their website, www.pacsports.com for more information on where to get the latest Nike Golf Products.

Last stand of the broomstick: Does Anchoring create an Advantage?

$

Broomstick

Words: Vince M

The United States Golf Association and R&A have proposed a ban on anchoring to take effect on 2016. Even though USGA and R&A’s governing body assured the golfing world that they will entertain questions and disputes before approving the rule change, it is pretty much set to take effect on 2016.

Why change it? What impact will this have to amateurs? How about senior players that still continue to stay in the game competitively because of the less back strain they achieve by using the broomstick putter? A lot of questions surround the amendment of this rule change.

Some speculation that brought about the sudden decision to the rule change is maybe that 3 of the last 5 major tournaments in 2012 were won by players using a broomstick putter. USGA and R&A maintain that it is not the reason why they decided on implementing the change, but the fact that many players are now resorting to the anchored style of putting. “Excessive” use of anchoring or the stroke being used in other shots such as chip shots around the green was also deemed as one of the reasons.

CBS anchor and former PGA tour player Johnny Miller had the chance to interview PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem during the final round of the Accenture Match Play Championships. The Commissioner states that He is opposing the rule change. “All pros have tried it, but not everyone used it. It’s not really that all players are opposed to the change, sure some players wants it removed, but majority of the players agree with me that it is pre-mature on the USGA and R&A’s part to suddenly decide on a ruling that they approved twice over the last 25 years”. Johnny Miller gave his personal input that the anchored strokes prevents the wrists from twitching or that “juke” move (creates a pull or push putt) as they call it before the stroke. Commissioner Finchem went on as” the absence of data and a concrete conclusion that anchoring creates a competitive advantage is a major question and see no reason why change it”.

webbsimpson

Professional players such as 2012 US Open Champion Webb Simpson will be directly affected by this change.

adamscott

Australian star Adam Scott rejuvenated his career when he switched over to the broomstick putter.

Commissioner Finchem added “that statistical data shows that 20% of amateurs in the world use it and 50% of college kids in the United States chose to play with the long putter. A swing rule should be substituted on anchoring and not the total ban as the governing bodies of golf proposed.” The PGA is still hoping that the USGA and R&A will change their minds on their decision.

Once the governing bodies of golf approve of the change, it will be part of the R&A’s Rules of golf. The R&A Rules of Golf is the “bible” when it comes to golf rules, and is applied to all amateurs and professional golfers all over the world. There will be a lot of debate in the next couple of months, and it will be interesting to see how it will all conclude.

PARTEE AT THE GREENS: 2nd Annual GolfPH Tournament

Wack Wack Golf Tournament

This summer, GolfPH once again invites you to experience another exciting game of golf as we hold our 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at the championship course of Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club. The tournament kicks off on April 25, 2013 at 8:00am.

Get ready to go for long drives and face undulating greens as you hit the fairways of Wack-Wack’s West Course. This 6,540-yard all-weather championship course, with its tricky and well-laden hazards would surely require more than just luck to overcome.

To make the game more exciting, we will be implementing the Texas Scramble Format:

1. Each team will consist of 4 players.

  • A late team partner may rejoin his team in between holes, but not during play of a hole.
  • A team lacking a player may designate a team member to hit two balls in lieu of the absent player, providing that player carries the 2nd highest handicap of the team.

2. The delegated team captain selects the best tee shot and marks the position (within 6 inches) with a tee peg (not nearer the hole).

  • Player whose ball was selected will play the next shot first. Other team members will alternately play their own ball within six inches of marked spot.( not closer to the hole)
  • If selected ball to play from is in the rough or hazard, ball must be dropped not placed.
  • This method of play will be followed until the green is reached.
  • The same method applies on the green. The ball chosen is marked (with a coin or tee) by a putter head length. Players will alternately putt from spot.
  • If that team member did not hole his putt, he/she must mark his/her ball from each position until ball is holed.
  • If a player missed the putt but then inadvertently knocks ball into the hole, that score will be the final score for the hole (regardless if team mates have not putted yet)

3. All other rules of golf apply to the “Ball in Play” In particular please be aware of Rule 14.2. Team members are not allowed to position themselves on or close to an extension of the line of play or the line of putt behind the ball.

  • A penalty of 2 strokes will be incurred for hitting the wrong ball in stroke play and losing the hole for match play.

For only P3,250, you get the opportunity to engage in a friendly golf competition with other GolfPH Members. You can also invite your friends to play for only P3, 650. The fee includes the green fee, lunch and golf cart. Plus, you also have a chance to participate in our raffle and win special prizes. Go for the win!

The air was filled with excitement and anticipation as players started to flock the registration in as early as 6:30AM. It was a euphoric moment to see approximately a hundred players, old and new faces alike, gather together to share their passion for the game of golf.

Partee at the Greens 2013

Focus… Focus… Focus!!

The players were all thrilled and eager to tee-off, but to overcome the famous West Course of Wack-Wack Golf proved to be a not-so easy task. This all-weather championship course surely didn’t let the players finish out without a good fight. The challenging terrains and well-laid traps and hazards definitely made the game more fun and challenging.

Course Review: Forest Hills Golf & CC – Nicklaus Course

$

forest-hills

Forest Hills features two golf courses. The Nicklaus Course is a sprawling par-71, 7,015-yard all-weather course. The Palmer Course on the other hand is equally challenging, a par-72, 6,186-yard all-weather course. Both courses are planted with Tifway 419 grass on the fairways, and Tifdwarf grass on the greens.

Forest Hills is also home to thousands of indigenous birds, part of a dedicated wildlife conservation effort which earned them distinguished recognition in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System in 2000.

The Nicklaus course is the older brother to the relatively newer Palmer course. Only 3 of its 11 par 4s are less than 400 yards.. It is a long course. You can get by with a point and shoot strategy but if you want to score then I got 2 words for you..

Course Strategy

FH 1st-hole

The opening hole could not be tougher. If you are not awake when you hit the 1st hole I bet you will be as you stare at your second shot.. After a decent drive you find yourself staring at a green guarded at the front by a ravine and a lone bunker ready to catch your ball if you overshoot the green. You have got to select the right club.

Holes 2, 3 and 4 keep up the frantic pace before you hit hole number 5.

FH fifth-hole

At handicap 1, its guarded by a stream in the front and right. The pin placement, if right and back, cannot be a tougher ask. After a good drive I found myself staring at my bag pondering whether to go for it or play safe. It’s the kind of hole which, if you miss, you kick yourself for choosing the wrong club. If you do, however, hit the mark, it is a very satisfying feeling which sets the scene nicely for the 6th. This is a definite birdie hole if you play smart. 2 well placed shots (read ‘left of the fairway’) will leave you with a short pitch to an unguarded green.

7th is a tricky par-3 which can ruin a good score. Club selection is very important as the wind can be pretty strong here.

8 9 12 collage

The 8th is my favourite hole on the course. It is a short par 4 which can be reached with 2 mid irons. Guarded by a lake on the right and a bunker on the left, it is definitely one of the more picturesque holes on the course.

Hole number 9: After a routine drive, the second shot plays uphill all the way to a very tricky green. All you can see is the bunker framing the green. Its an apple shaped green and a poisoned one at that. A Two-putt is a job well done.

The toughest hole on the course (even though its handicap 2) is the Par 4 12th.

The fairway is besotted with danger on all 4 sides and the green is a mid iron away. For the faint hearted there is an extension of the fairway (so to speak), again guarded by danger at the front and sides, its prudent to try and reach the green in 3 and play for bogey. Funnily enough, the tee box sits so high up, the wind is definitely a factor. I found my drive carrying almost 300 yards which I have never managed, ever. The fairway is narrow and its best to stay on the left since you cannot see the right side of the fairway from the tee box. What you think might be the fairway is actually a hazard.

What the 12th taketh away, the 13th giveth.

It is a short par 3 which will give you an early chance at a birdie on the ‘so-far’ tough back 9. The going from there gets even more brutal.

Hole 14 was under repair when we played but by the looks of it, its a tough one..the second shot should reach an elevated green which has a nasty slope, back to front. We were able to putt on the green and it is lightning quick!!

FH 15th-Hole

The 15th is a thinking man’s hole. Club selection is vital because the green sits well below the teeing ground but the wind can carry your ball to the left or right depending on which way it blows.

The 16th is a reachable Par 5. A well placed driver will leave you with a long to mid iron second to a green which is seriously quick from back to front.

Hole 18 is a relatively straight par 4 but the green is the most striking feature. It features a bunker in the middle of the putting surface reminiscent of the 6th at Riviera Country Club (the one in California, not the one in good’ ole Cavite). Ridiculous? , perhaps. Striking? Definitely.

FH clubhouse

The clubhouse was designed by architect Ruben Payumo, featuring a distinctive three-cone roof inspired by the famous “salakot” hats of Filipino farmers. Its charming and laid back, just the way you want it after a hard day’s work. This was my first time playing a course north of the metropolis and its not going to be my last. The courses here, including Sun Valley and Valley golf demand to be spoken of in the same breath as some of the courses in the south. They are that good.

Thinking back at my round as I sit here typing; when I play golf, I always want to keep score and track my progress. I do chat with my flight mates and share occasional banter but I never lose sight of the score. The funny thing was, as I walked off the 18th green, I never once did recall asking my caddy about my score. Its a testament to the course that it grabs your attention in a way like no other. Hole after hole, fairway after fairway, it all moves with the nobility of a big river.

The biggest compliment I can pay the course is that I just went out and played golf.. Score be damned, I enjoyed it.
